MGR Government Film And Television Institute (MGR), Chennai was established in 1960. The college is approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The institute is an advanced institute for Film Techniques and Aesthetics. The main objectives of the Institute is to impart training in various aspects of Film Production, TV and allied subjects and to award Diploma to successful candidates and to help appreciate the power of the medium of Film for entertainment and education and make use of them. 

The M.G.R. Government Film and Television Institute functions under the control of the Director of Information and Public Relations. M.G.R. Government Film and Television Institute offers a wide range of On Campus and Off Campus accommodations to the Student. The institute's infrastructure is modern with well equipped facilities. A variety of teaching and learning techniques are employed to impart knowledge and skills to the students in various departments of the college.
