International Women's Day is celebrated on February 22nd, as a mark of honour, because on this day in Russia many  women led the way to strikes in factories.

It is true some developments in USSR were not in conformity with the ideals of socialism.
(i) A backward country had become a great power. Its industries and agriculture had developed and the poor were being fed. But the social and economic developments in USSR were accompanied by many serious failures.
(ii) The state denied essential freedoms to its citizens and carried out its development projects through repressive policies.
(iii) Some economic policies of the government brought terrible misery to the people especially peasants. Within a few years of the Revolution, political power came to be concentrated into the hand of a single man-Stalin.
(iv) Russia became a one-party state.
(v) Discussion and debate over policies, even within the ruling party, had ceased. Critics within the party were charged with conspiracy against socialism and sent to labour camps or prisons.
(vi) Civil liberties were curbed. A large number of people, many talented professionals were forced to make false confessions under torture and were executed.
(vii) Russian revolution led to the establishment of totalitarianism and regimentation of life.
(viii) Life of an individual came to be controlled by the state.
(ix) Dictatorship of the Tsar came to be replaced by tyranny of the other persons, such as Lenin etc.

Society as a whole rather than  single individuals was to control property. As suggested  by  Marx and Engels, property instead of being  used for personal gain and profit motive, would be socially  controlled and engaged in the welfare of these who made the property productive , i.e. workers. It would serve collective social interests.

(i) In the countryside, peasants and their Socialist Revolutionary leaders pressed for a redistribution of land.
(ii) Land committees were formed.
(iii) Encouraged by the Socialist Revolutionarie, peasants seized land between July and September 1917.

Factors enabling industrialisation were :
(i)  increased foreign investments
(ii)  extension of railway network
(iii) doubling of coal production
(iv) quadrupling of iron and steel output
