1. India is situated from west to east in about 30 longitudes. It takes 4 minutes to cross a longitude 360 longitude 24 hours = 15 longitudes in 1 hour (60 min)
2. India is situated between 68 E to 97 E. Hence, there is a two hours difference in the timing of the westernmost extremity and the easternmost extremity of India. If there is no standard meridian in india, we have to advance our watch by 4 minutes on each longitude, if we travel from west to east. In order to avoid the problem we have chosen as standard meridian and its local time is taken as standard throughout the country.
Location:
Statdard Meridian of India is \(82^{ \circ }30'E\) and it passes through Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. -

The proportion of poor people is not the same in every state of India.
1. Although state level poverty has witnessed a secular decline from the levels of early seventies, the success rate of reducing poverty varies from state to state.
2. Recent estimates show while the all India HCR was 21.9 per cent in 2011-12 states like Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Uttar Pardesh, Bihar and Odisha were above all India poverty level.
3. Bihar and Odisha continue to be the two poorest states with poverty ratio of 33.7 and 32.6 percent respectively as per datas of 2013-14. Along with rural poverty, urban poverty is also high in Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. -
(a) Minimum support price
(i) It is the pre-announced price at which the government purchases food grains from the farmers in order to create a buffer stock. The minimum support price is declared by the government every year before the growing season. This provides incentives to the farmers for raising the production of the crops.
(ii) The rising minimum support prices of rice and wheat have induced farmers to divert land from the production of coarse grains-the staple food of the poor-to the production of these crops. The rising minimum support prices have raised the maintenance cost of procuring food grains.
(b) Buffer stock. The surplus stock of foodgrains, namely wheat and rice, procured and stored by FCI is known as buffer stock. It is distributed in the deficit areas and among needy people.
(c) Issue price. The price at which foodgrains are issued by the government to deficit areas is known as Issue Price. This price is lesser than the market price.
(d) Fair price shops. Fair price shop is a government-sponsored outlet to supply essential items at subsidised rates to the weaker section of society and BPL families.
