One day, Ganesh asked his father why is government so much worried about decreasing population of tigers ? His father replied that it is important to save the tiger as they are at the end of food chains in forest ecosystem and play a role to keep the biotic components in ecosystem in balance.
Read the above passage and answer the following questions:
(i) What is a food chain ?
(ii) What is an ecosystem ?
(iii) What value is displayed by Ganesh's father?(a) -
In every summer, Ravi used to visit his native village. Many years ago when he was a small child, a large amount of soil was removed from his village land for construction purpose and as a result a pond was formed after rainy season. Every year, he observed gradual changes in the vegetation of the pond.
Read the above passage and answer the following questions:
(i) What is the term used to describe the process of colonization of a new barren area?
(ii) Define climax. What is the status of climax community?(a) -
Grandfather told his grandson Arun that many years ago in Uttrakhand, villagers started a movement to save trees of Himalayas by hugging the trees whenever contractors came to cut trees. This movement was effective in saving our forest wealth.
Read the above passage and answer the following questions:
(i) What is the name given to this movement?
(ii) How are trees imported for maintaining ecosystem?
(iii) What value was displayed by villagers?(a) -
Avinash went to his village during his summer vacations. One day, he decided to visit the nearby forest and asked his grandfather to accompany him. -
(i) The sequential inter-linking of organisms involving the transfer of food energy from the producers, through a series of organisms with repeated eating and being eaten is referred to as the food chain.
(ii) It is defined as a structural and functional unit of the biosphere, compressing living organisms and their non living environment that interact by means of food chains and chemical cycles resulting in energy flow, biotic diversity and material cycling to form a stable, self-supporting system.
(iii) Genesh's father wanted to enhance his son's interest in environmental science. -
(i) It is known as ecological succession.
(ii) This is the terminal stage of the process of ecological succession. The final community becomes more or less stabilized for a long period of time and can maintain itself in a perfect equilibrium with climatic and edaphic conditions. -
(i) Chipko movement.
(ii) Trees are important component of forest ecosystem as they are producers, play important role in water cycle, and also prevent soil erosion etc.
(iii) Villagers wanted to protect the overall environment by checking natural calamities such as flood and drought, and maintaining harmony between different components of ecosystem. -
(i) Healthy forest ecosystem purifies air and water, mitigate droughts and floods, cycle nutrients, generates fertile soils, provides wildlife habitat, maintains biodiversity, pollinate crops, provides storage site for carbon and also provides aesthetic, cultural and spiritual values.
(iii) Out of cost of various ecosystem services, soil formation accounts for 50% and contribution of other services like recreation and nutrient cycling are less then 10% each. The cost of climate regulation and habitat for wildlife are about 6% each.
(iv) Values shown by Avinash are awareness towards ecosystem and environment. -
(i) He occupies three trophic levels in three different food chains.
(ii) (a)Plants(vegetables) ->Pragyan
(b)Plants->Insects->Hen->Egg->Pragyan
(c)Plants->Hen->Egg->Pragyan.
(iii) Food chain (a) gives him maximum energy. This is because plants are autotrophs, i.e. they produce food through the process of photosynthesis and according to 10% law only 10% energy is passed on to next trophic level.
(iv) Pragyan is a sincere child, who possess scientific attitude towards his daily life.
