Arrange following complex ions in increasing order of crystal field splitting energy \((\triangle_0)\) :
\([Cr(Cl)_6]^{3-}, [Cr(CN)_6]^{3-}, [Cr(NH_3)_6]^{3+}.\)\(\)
(a) -
Why do compounds having similar geometry have different magnetic moment ?
(a) -
\(CuSO_4.5\ H_2O\) is blue in colour while \(CuSO_4\) is Colourless. Why ?
(a) -
Write the name, state of hybridization, shape and magnetic behaviour of the following complexes :
[CoCl4]2-,[Ni(CN)4]2-,[Cr(H2O)2(C2O4)2]-

CBSE 12th Standard Chemistry Subject Coordination Compounds Ncert Exemplar 2 Mark Questions 2021 Answer Keys
-
From spectrochemical series, CFSE of ligands is in the order
-
The compounds having similar geometry may have different number of unpaired electrons. due to the presence of weak and strong field ligands in complexes. If CFSE is high, the complex will show low value of magnetic moment and if CFSE is low, the complex will show high value of magnetic moment. For example, the [CoF6]3- is paramagnetic but [Co(NH3)6]3+ is diamagnetic.
-
In \(CuSO_4.5\ H_2O, \ 4\ H_2O\) molecules are present as ligand. Crystal field splitting occurs and hence d-d transition occurs which gives it blue colour. In CuSO4, there are no H2O molecules present as ligand. No crystal field splitting occurs and hence it has no colour.
-
(i) sp3 , tetrahedral, paramagnetic
(ii) dsp2, square planar, diamagnetic
(iii) d2sp3, octahedral, paramagnetic
